Character Creation

1. Basic Information Sources

1.1 Ability Scores
We use the 27 point buy system. You can find a very handy calculator here: Point Buy Calculator. You won’t need this quite yet, as you will first create your character in Chronica before moving to Roll20, we’re just letting you know.

1.2 Starting Level
You will begin your adventures at Level 1.

1.3 Supported Materials
We have a large selection of quality and play-tested homebrew, but for now, everything you need is here:

  • View available races here.
  • View available backgrounds here.
  • View available classes here.

1.4 Multi-classing
After reaching Tier 2, characters are allowed to multi-class with NM permission. However, this isn’t automatic; it requires a valid roleplay reason. We discourage purely mechanical “builds” and instead encourage multi-classing to occur naturally within your character’s story. If approved, you must take the next three levels in the new class. Our server prioritizes character development and storytelling, so we’re cautious about approving builds that might disrupt balance.

1.5 Character Tracking
We use data in a few different ways here. Your Chronica profile gives a quick overview of your character, while your Roll20 sheet is what you’ll use during game sessions. It’s important to keep these sheets in sync manually.

Your full inventory and wealth are mainly tracked on Chronica, while your immediate on-person inventory and wealth are on Roll20. Downtime is automatically tracked on Discord.

Chronica makes tracking your inventory and wealth easy, even if you run multiple characters!

2.0 Character Outline on Chronica

THE CHARACTER CREATION PROCESS HAPPENS IN TWO PLACES – START WITH CHRONICA.

2.0 Sign up for Chronica.

  • Click this referral link and establish a Chronica account (it’s 100% free).
  • Once you have signed up, head to the #character-submission channel in Discord and click the New Character button. Follow the instructions in your new submission.

2.1 Create your character on Chronica.
Once you have been added to the Chronica campaign, click into the campaign from your User Dashboard. Go to Player Codex in the left navigation and click New Character in the upper right corner.

2.2 Fill in the basics.

  • Fill out your Name and Gender.
  • Leave the Character Status dropdown as “Alive”.
  • In Player Codex Folder dropdown, select “New Character”.
  • Your Chronica username should already be selected in the next box.
  • In the Player Character Special Label dropdown, select “Main Character”.
  • Leave the Title field blank. This is not the same as the title granted to you by your profession.
  • Leave Faction blank.
  • Disposition can be left alone, as it only applies to NPCs.
  • Fill out your RaceClass, and Alignment. If you know what subclass you will be, please fill that in as well in the Class box.
  • Click to expand the Bio stats. Fill out your Birth YearHeightWeightEyesSkin, and Hair. This will need to match your Roll20 sheet that you create later. You can find the current in-game year here, to figure out your birth year based on your age. Your character MUST be of a legal adult age as per their race (note that for most races, this means 19 years old, rather than 18).
  • Click to expand the Character Info stats. Fill out your Divine Creed. If you do not follow one, enter “Free Soul”. Approved divine creeds can be found here.
  • Expand the Background stats and fill in your selected character Background and Profession, as well as your current Rank Title and Rank (1-4). For example, a Sailor would put ‘Deck Hand’ as their Rank Title, and ‘1’ as their Rank.
  • In the Description box, enter your character’s backstory. Your character’s background is crucial as it sets the stage for who they are and how they’ve arrived at their current point. While we don’t need a lengthy novel, more than just a single paragraph is preferred. Remember, at level 1, your character hasn’t yet accomplished grand deeds; those come later in your journey on the server.
  • The Notes box may contain any extra information you wish to list. You may also add something in Personal Secrets if your character has something particular about them you want hidden from players. Only you and DMs can see Personal Secrets, but the DMs may share some lines here with the Masters of Tradition.
  • Upload a portrait image. We have some simple art standards to keep a semblance of fantasy environment and request no overly anime, “cartoony”, or photographic images. Masters of Tradition / Night Masters have the final say on the image you choose. Your image will upload once you hit Create Character in the next step.
  • Click the blue Create Character at the bottom and double check the profile.

2.3 Edit Character Abilities
From your character profile, click the green Edit Character Abilities at the top. Expand the various Proficiencies boxes to select anything your character is currently proficient in such as languages, tools, and instruments.

2.4 Submit Character
Head back over to Discord. Change your nickname on our Discord server to: “NickName [HeroName]”. Your NickName is what you prefer to be called by on the server. This name really should not be changed, and sticks with you for your time here, so pick something you will be used to. Your HeroName is the name of your character. Please avoid any emojis or special characters outside of normal language.
Example: Tonya[Eriese]

2.5 Update your Character Creation Ticket
Once you complete the above steps, head to your Creation Ticket in the Claimed Tickets folder on discord. There you will find notes in your progress and/or advisement to proceed to step 3.

3.0 Character Sheet on Roll20

ONCE YOUR CHRONICA OUTLINE IS APPROVED, YOU CAN MOVE ON TO ROLL20.

3.1 Join the Roll20 Character Creation Server
Log into Roll20 and launch the Character Creation server. A link to the Character Creation server can be found in your Character Creation Ticket on discord or the #welcome channel.

3.2 Locate your blank character sheet
You should see a few fresh character sheets on Roll20 waiting for you to edit labeled as “New Adventurer”, “Blank”, or with your username. Grab one of these and continue below. If you do not see a blank sheet, respond to your Character Submission Ticket in Discord, and we will load one for you.

3.3 Begin creating your character
The document might seem overwhelming, but don’t fret! At level 1, there’s not much to contribute yet.

Follow these steps carefully to start creating your character.

Remember, this website is your main source for all the information you need. Everything you require is conveniently located here!

Please note that some content has been adjusted to fit our server’s unique homebrew. It might differ from the current books or content from other providers.

  1. Fill out your Name the banner under the dragon.
  2. Click the small gear in the top right.
  3. Select your class from the dropdown.
    1. If Your class isn’t listed do the following before proceeding to step 4.
    2. Click the get in the box next to [Spells], this will open the Options page.
    3. Find the “CUSTOM CLASS OPTIONS” section about halfway down the left side of the sheet.
    4. Check the “Use Custom Class” box.
    5. Enter the Name of your class and select the appropriate Hit Die.
    6. If your class has spellcasting, select the appropriate ability, and spell slots.
    7. Lastly, check the two Saving Throws that are granted by your class.
    8. An example of the Blackclad is provided here:
  4. Fill out your Race, and Subrace if your race has one.
Leave Creature Type blank, and your Level will be 1. When you are finished, Click the gear in the upper right again (step 2) to close this section.
  1. Use the Point Buy Calculator to calculate your starting stats. Remember to select Custom Race and watch the total at the bottom to ensure it reads 27/27 when you are done.
  2. With that done, head to the Options Tab on your Roll20 sheet (the same page as the Custom Class section – see step a. Sheet Header) and locate the “Attribute Options” in the top middle of the page.
  3. Add the Racial Stat Modifiers from your race. An example of this is shown here. Yours should be formatted exactly as this (albeit with the correct modifiers for your chosen race in their appropriate spot).

We will now fill out most of your core statistics. These are the ability scores you ended up with in the prior step from your Point Buy, as well as other things from your Race, Class, Background and Profession.
  1. Back on the [Core] page, edit your stats on the far left by clicking the small numbers in the circles. Enter only the base stats you bought, not those you got from racial.
  2. Your Saving Throws should be automatically selected. If not, ensure you chose the appropriate class or entered your custom class correctly.
  3. Check the skills are granted from your Race, Class, Background and Profession.
  4. Enter your Speed (see your Race).
  5. Enter “1” for your Hit Dice.
  6. Enter your Maximum Hit Points and Current Hit Points (see your Class for this calculation at 1st level).
Now you will list all of the features, abilities and things that are granted to you by your Class, Race, Background and Profession. Entering these things correctly is important, so that later you don’t have to try to find things and have an easy reference for what your character can do.
  1. In the [Features & Traits] section, click the [+] to add a new feature. Enter in the the following:
    1. [Name] = This is the name of the Feature.
    2. [Source] = This is the source that grants the Feature.
    3. [Source Type] = This is the type of the source. Your class or background/profession for example.
    4. [Description] = This is the text description of the Feature. You can cut & paste or summarize these, but ensure you have enough information to be able to refer to it later.
    5. When you are done click the⚙️to the right of the Feature Name to collapse this Feature.
    6. Continue steps 1 – 5 until you’ve added all your Features.
  2. Above the Features & Traits section are two boxes labeled [Class Resource] and [Other Resource]. Click the words [Other Resource] and change them to “Incarnum”. This will be where you track your Incarnum pool. Input your maximum as well as your current.
  3. Optional: If your class has a resource that it needs to track, such as a Tacticians Tactic Points, Change the name of [Class Resource] to this class resources name, and input the values.
  4. Optional: If you need to track more Resources, you can click the [+] under the Class Resource and repeat step 3 as necessary.
Hint: You can expand and contract your Features by clicking the title of the feature. In addition, you can easily filter these by clicking the “Filter by…” at the top to quickly find things as this section will expand to contain a great deal of information as you level up – this is why its important to ensure things are entered correctly.
Your Class, Race, Background and Profession can all grant you Proficiency in a number of things. Local the “Tool Proficiencies & Custom Skills” and “Other Proficiencies & Languages” on the bottom left of the [Core] page.
  1. Using the same method you used to add Features, add your Tool and Other Proficiencies to the corresponding sections.
You’re getting close to being done! Just a few more details to add. Let’s ensure we know everything else about your character. Locate the sheet header of the [Core] page (step A.), and update the following:
  1. In [Background] enter your Profession, with your Background in parenthesis.
  2. In [Alignment] enter your characters alignment Philosophy. See Alignment.
  3. In [Experience Points] put a 0. We don’t use experience points here, instead we grant levels based on sessions attended. You can view the rules on this here. You will utilize this space to denote how many complete sessions you have attended.

Next we will input all your Bio stats.
  4. Click the [Bio] button to change to the Biography page.
  5. In [Age] enter your characters age, in years. Information on age can be found in your Race page as well as here.
  6. In [Size] put your characters size.
  7. Input your [Height] and [Weight] in their respective sections
  8. Input your [Eye], [Skin], and [Hair] colors/descriptions in their respective sections.

The rest of the [Bio] page can be used for your record keeping purposes throughout your adventuring career.
If you have the ability to cast spells, you will want to add them now. Click the [Spells] tab and follow the following steps:
  1. To add a spell to its appropriate level section, click the [+] and enter in the spell information. Information on spells can be found here.
    1. Alternatively, you can drag and drop from the Compendium if the spell exists within, but you must ensure that the final version is edited to match what is listed on the Soulforge Website.
  2. As you expend spells, the number of “Slots Remaining” will decrease, for not input your max here.
Your character is granted both wealth and equipment from your Class, Background and Profession. On the [Core] page you will enter these items, but note that your true inventory will be done in Creation Process step 4 (this is just a representation of your characters inventory at this point, but does not represent their entire ‘horde’ as they say).
  1. Enter the total wealth in the appropriate section for the denomination.
  2. Enter your items. (To be done later in Step 4.2, but presented here for instructional purposes)
    1. In most cases you should be able to drag and drop these from the Compendium, but if an item doesn’t exist there you will need to manually enter it. As always, its your responsibility to ensure that it matches the items listed on the Soulforge Website. Items can be found here.
  3. Some items are custom to our world and you will need to enter them manually. A demonstration of such an item (the Cleft Spear) is below as an example.
This is a list of reminders to ensure you didn’t forget anything, some of them may or may not apply.
  1. Talents! We don’t utilize standard background Traits, Ideals, Bonds or Flaws. Instead we utilize Advanced Backgrounds and Professions. Each time you gain a Rank (including your starting Rank) in a profession, you can select a Talent you qualify for. Be sure to pick one, and add it to the [Features & Traits] sections on the [Core] page.
  2. Date of Birth! We should have probably mentioned it before, but it would be wise to put your characters Date of Birth in the Bio section next to their age.
    1. Age! All characters must be created as (at least) an adult. Head over to the Aging page, and be sure to roll once for both a quirk and a boon if your character falls within the ‘Adult’ age range, or twice if they fall within the ‘Elderly’ age range, or three times if they fall within the ‘Venerable’ age range. As your character continues to age, make sure you make these additional rolls as they cross from one stage of life to the next. Initial rolls should be made in discord in your character creation ticket using the following command:
      /roll limit: 4
Changes to your ability scores from these quirks or boons should be reflected in the same place as your racial ability score adjustments.
  3. Inner Soul! You can, at your option select an Inner Soul. You may not select this after creation, so be sure to check it out now and account for it. Be sure to add this to the “Other” section of Features & Traits.
  4. Item Slots! You can’t go around carrying the equivalent of a department store in your pocket so we enforce item slots. Head back to the [Features & Traits] section – we told you this section was important! – and enter in all your item slots. You can utilize this to track what items go in what slots, if they are attuned and their powers/abilities (if any). Make it easy by filtering by “Items…”. A screenshot of an example is below.
We’ve saved the best for last! Since we are playing digitally, there are few opportunities for everyone to understand who your character is other than your voice. Your Characters Portrait Token is the sole visual representation of your character to everyone else in the world. As such, we put a great deal of emphasis on ensuring its a great depiction of your vision for your character. If you need help with art, ask in discord. Other wise the last step is to upload your Character Token. Click the [Edit] button at the top right hand side of your Character Sheet. Upload a token image in both the Avatar and Default Token areas.
  1. Use the Token Stamp website to generate a token with your Zoomed-in Headshot. Be sure to use the default character border to start, you may upgrade your token border once you advance further in our community. Here is an example:

4.0 Chronica Equipment and Final Setup

THE FINAL STEP BEFORE ADVENTURE.

It might seem like we are circling back to where we started, and in some ways we are, but it was important to ensure that we had the basics of creation down before we got to this point.

4.1 Inventory & Wealth Tracking
Chronica serves as the comprehensive record for all your inventory and wealth. Each time your Chronica wealth is modified, it’s essential to include a descriptive note to track the change, enabling Game Masters to conduct audits on your wealth logs. Your Roll20 inventory, following the initial audit, will exclusively include items and gold carried on your person for the current quest. To clarify, Chronica functions as your master inventory, housing all wealth and items categorized into containers, while Roll20, post-audit, is streamlined to include only items and gold relevant to your current adventures.

4.2 Starting Equipment & Wealth

  • To begin, navigate to your Player Dashboard in Chronica. Click on the green “Edit Wealth” button and add your starting wealth of 150 gp.
  • Proceed to the Campaign Shops section located in the left navigation menu on Chronica.
    • You are welcome to spend your starting wealth however you wish.
    • Each class, background and profession have suggested items for purchase, but you are free to choose as you wish.
  • Browse through the items listed, and “Buy Item” for each of your starting items.
  • PRO TIP: You should purchase a “Chest”. This will contain items that are not on your character’s physical person.
    • Recipes, perhaps some supplies or other things you do not wish to carry around with you, etc.
  • If your class, background or profession grants an item(s) with “no value”, you should create this item yourself in Chronica/Roll20.
  • Go back to Roll20 and add all your equipment that will be on your character’s person (not stored in your chest, etc.).

4.2 Respond to your Creation Ticket
Once complete, tag your auditor in your Character Creation ticket on discord, letting them know you are ready for your final audit. You will receive instructions at this time.

5. Welcome!

START FORGING YOUR ADVENTURE.

5.1 Congratulations!
You did it and are ready to enter Soulforge Adventures. You will be entitled to see the rest of the server in discord, sign up for adventures and begin roleplaying immediately.

5.2 Forge Ahead.
Now that character creation is out of the way, a Game Master will move your character to the appropriate roll20 server once its time for adventure. No more changes should be made on the Character Creation (roll20) server. A link to the Head Table (roll20) can be found in #adventure-info.
