Adventuring is a journey of self-discovery, and sometimes a hero’s path changes in ways they could never have anticipated. Soul Reforging represents a profound transformation of a character’s essence, allowing them to adapt to new ideals, roles, and strengths. Whether born of newfound clarity, divine intervention, or an extraordinary magical event, Soul Reforging enables a character to redefine themselves while maintaining a connection to their narrative journey.
When to Reforge
A player may invoke Soul Reforging with the Dungeon Master’s approval under one or more of the following circumstances:
- The player’s character concept has evolved through roleplay or story events, and their current mechanics no longer reflect their identity.
- A new class, subclass, or other option has become available that better aligns with the player’s vision for their character.
- The character’s storyline or worldbuilding circumstances support a transformative change.
The Dungeon Master and player should work together to ensure that Soul Reforging enhances the character’s narrative and fits the campaign’s tone.

Rules for Soul Reforging
Soul Reforging allows a character to recreate themselves while preserving their narrative continuity. The following rules apply:
- Complete Rebuild
- You rebuild your character from the ground up, essentially creating a new character of the same level as your current character.
- Immutable Traits
- You cannot change your character’s ability scores, age, race, or inner soul.
- Redistribution of ASI
- You lose all Ability Score Improvements (ASI) from your former class and may redistribute them.
- Feats
- You lose all feats taken as part of your prior class. However, you may select feats again during the rebuild process if eligible.
- Crafted Spells
- If you have crafted any spells, you retain those spells and can cast them.
- If your new class lacks spellcasting, you may cast leveled spells once per day and cantrips as normal.
- If you have crafted any spells, you retain those spells and can cast them.
- Racial Consistency
- You cannot change your race in any way.
- Prerequisites
- You must meet all prerequisites for all features, abilities, feats, and spells as normal.
- Any abilities or benefits retained from other sources (such as piety or feats) still require all prerequisites to be met before use.
- No Multiclass Rebuilds
- You cannot rebuild into a multiclass character.
- A multiclass character may be rebuilt into a single-class character.
- Once rebuilt, a character may multiclass upon gaining a new level, but the rebuild itself must result in a single-class character.
- You cannot rebuild into a multiclass character.
- Magic Item Attunement
- All magic items that were attuned to you remain attuned unless your new class prohibits their attunement.
- Hit Point Recalculation
- You must recalculate your hit points based on your new class.
- Skill Tricks
- If you lose a skill in which you had learned a skill trick, you lose the use of that skill trick.
- Proficiencies:
- You retain all recipes you knew prior to the rebuild.
- You lose all proficiencies granted by your former class. All other proficiencies (such as those granted by your race, background, or downtime learning) are retained.
Example: Soul Reforging in Play
Kara, a 7th-level Barbarian, decides to undergo Soul Reforging after a divine revelation. She rebuilds as a 7th-level Paladin, redistributes her ASIs, and recalculates her hit points. While Kara retains her racial proficiencies and recipes, she loses her Barbarian-specific proficiencies and must adjust her spell list to match her new Paladin class. Her crafted spells remain usable, and her narrative evolves to reflect this transformative event.
Soul Reforging provides players with a unique opportunity to adapt their characters to changing stories and ideas while maintaining the integrity of the campaign. Use this option sparingly and thoughtfully to ensure it enriches the tale you’re telling together.
