The following rules apply mostly to roleplay in Discord Roleplay channels, but are also applicable to any Roleplay done in any game sessions or elsewhere.
General Roleplay
- All roleplaying must be PG-13.
- No ‘Out of Character’ information, discussion or interaction of any kind.
- If your character wouldn’t say or do it… then you should not be roleplaying it.
- Spells cannot be cast outside of game session if they affect another player negatively or impact the world in any way. It is easy to determine if this is the case: If the spell requires any sort of die roll, it cannot be cast outside of game session without GM permission. Limited use of other spells is fine within your own RP provided they don’t violate any other rule or allow for circumvention of any activity (i.e., Fly is prohibited as a means of travel, etc.)
- This would extend to any class, racial, magic item or other abilities granted from any source that emulate a spell, or produce any sort of effect, etc. Use of these things is limited to in-game sessions.
- Note that using these things for mundane tasks (using a mage hand to fetch you a mug of ale for example) or for RP flavor (using darkvision to see a cat in a dark alley) are acceptable provided the benefit is for RP purposes and doesn’t violate any other aspect noted here.
- Actions in RP:
- If anything you are roleplaying out would, in an in-game sessions, require a roll. Then it is prohibited in RP. Some examples include:
- Attacking, thieving, casting, etc.
- If anything you are roleplaying out would, in an in-game sessions, require a roll. Then it is prohibited in RP. Some examples include:
- Interaction with AI. Soulforge Adventures has many diverse and interesting AI NPCs for you to interact with. You may interact with them as you would anyone else, but keep the following in mind:
- They are AI and their concept of things is often skewed as they don’t know the entirety of the game world. There is only so much we can code an AI to know as a baseline for our purposes. To some suspension of disbelief is necessary. For example; an AI NPC might think that there is a sun. You could simply remind them that this isn’t the case, or ignore it.
- You are not allowed to manipulate the AI. Since it is AI, it is subject to worded prompts as input to yield a specific result. Any attempt to manipulate an AI to give a chosen response is prohibited.
- All rules that apply to RP, apply to interaction with AI NPCs.
- Roleplaying travel outside of town is not allowed without GM permission. This is because outside of quests, if you are leaving the residential areas, it requires a purpose and the expenditure of downtime. All RP will remain inside our geographical locations available via travel.
Discord Roleplay
- Tagging, emojis, reactions, images, or graphics of any kind is prohibited in the roleplay channels.
- Please do not spam the roleplay channels with nonsense. Your narrative should accomplish something or tell us something about your character.
- When roleplaying in Discord, you must make it evident which character your roleplay is specific to, by using that particular character’s name in the roleplay text. You are not permitted to roleplay between your own active characters, as they cannot see one other while active. You are able to write roleplay between your active and a past or future family character, so long as no mechanical benefits are being gained by this, such as intel, items, secrets, etc. If that character is an NPC for something, please seek GM permission first.
- You are allowed to RP with an NPC you have made up for the development of your own character. (A brother, a shopkeeper, a best friend, etc.) Just please ALWAYS keep in mind, this is YOUR story. Not theirs. The focus should always be you, and using the NPC as a ways to present more information about your character that would be difficult to learn otherwise.
Discord Roleplay Formatting
- Conversational Text
- Use: Normal syntax is used for dialogue without any special formatting. It’s the default style for most conversation text.
- Syntax: No special syntax is necessary, simply type.
- Bold
- Use: Used to emphasize important words or phrases in a dialogue, drawing attention to them and adding emphasis or significance.
- Syntax: Put two asterisks ** in front of and behind the block of text you wish to make bold.
- Example Input: “Close the **door**!!”
- Example Output: “Close the door!!
- Italics:
- Use: Used for internal monologue, thoughts or actions of characters. Italicized text indicates thoughts or reflections that the character is not thinking out loud.
- Example Input: *Chet felt a draft coming from under the door.*
- Example Output: Chet felt a draft coming from under the door.
- Block Quote:
- Use: Used to display written elements, physical objects with words such as excerpts from scrolls or books that are not part of a conversation or read out loud.
- Example Input: >>> Behold the stone that faces east under a full moon.
- Example Output: | Behold the stone that faces east under a full moon.
Example Discord Roleplay
The following is an example roleplay, using all of the proper formatting and etiquette. The following is presented with the discord syntax displayed for ease of reference.
Shopkeeper (Alistair)
Alistair looked up from his work and smiled, “Greetings, travelers, and welcome to the Mystical Emporium of Alistair the Wise. How may I be of service to you on this fine day?”
Adventurer 1 (Erik)
Erik bowed, “Ah, Alistair! We come bearing an artifact of ancient origin, seeking your expertise in unlocking its secrets.”
Shopkeeper (Alistair):
*Ah, adventurers seeking knowledge of the arcane. Pray tell, what have you brought before me?*
Adventurer 2 (Fiona)
Fiona smiled, “We have with us a scroll, Alistair, its surface inscribed with cryptic symbols of a forgotten era. We require your insight to decipher its meaning.”
Shopkeeper (Alistair)
“**Indeed**!” said Alistair. “A scroll of mysterious origins. Let us see what secrets it holds within its ancient script.”
*Alistair carefully unfurled the scroll, revealing the intricate symbols and text that adorned its weathered parchment
. It’s weathered script was strange but not foreign to him.*
>>> A Darkness will befall the land for all eternity, lest a hero shines light upon it.
Erik
“Can you decipher its meaning, Alistair?” said Eirk.
*He wondered if the old man could, perhaps finally he would unveil the truth hidden within the cryptic symbols.*
Alistair
“**Patience**, my friends,” said Alistair. “For the mysteries of the arcane cannot be unraveled in haste. Let us delve into the depths of this scroll and unveil the truths that lie within.”
*Alistair closed his eyes, his hands glowing with a faint aura of magic as he began to chant softly, delving into the depths of the scroll’s ancient text.*
Roleplay Tiers
Roleplaying in discord earns you Roleplay XP! As you earn experience roleplaying, you gain access to more roleplay channels. Unlike Character XP, Roleplay XP is account-wide. Your RP level is unlocked for all characters, but you should pay special attention to ensuring your character’s are roleplaying in the appropriate locations.
Tier | Roleplay Level Range |
---|---|
Desolate | 0 – 7 |
Harvester | 8 – 15 |
Vanguard | 16 – 25 |
Sovereign | 26+ |
- Desolate
- A desolate is new to the city of Newforge. Citizens of Newforge are leery of local residents, so a newcomer is treated with great suspicion and dubiousness. Desolates find it hard to gain entry to some places and certain parts of the city are off limits entirely.
- Harvester
- A harvester is someone who has established themself in Newforge as a regular, perhaps not a resident, but a stable contributor to the city. Most merchants are of this ilk and they find their lives smack in the middle of everything. Some places are off limits to even a harvester though.
- Vanguard
- A vanguard has attained citizenship – if such a thing existed – to Newforge. Outside of places of nobility, there aren’t many locations that a vanguard cannot wander. They are looked up to by the harvesters and the desolates gaze at them from afar.
- Sovereign
- A sovereign has gained some level of renown and recognition above that of the average citizen. They are a common name whispered, or yelled in some cases, on the lips of most of the populace. If a sovereign is aware of a place within the city, then they can seek it out – though even a sovereign is not always welcome.
In addition, as you gain levels in role-playing, you gain access to special RP Feats. RP Feats are unlocked for all characters, but each character must meet the PC prerequisite level before they can benefit from it. Most of them have little bearing or weight to in-session game play, and most are cosmetic, roleplay or world building in how they are written, but gives a little bit extra flavor to your characters and how they are in the world.
You may pick ONE feat per character you have starting at RP Level 5, and every 5 levels after that up to RP level 50. Each character you have, can obtain a different feat. This must be tracked and documented in your Chronica character sheet in the Roleplay Feat fields. Newly created characters can retroactively gain the appropriate number of RP Feats.
- For Example: If you are RP Level 20, then you have selected 4 RP Feats so far. You create a new character (for whatever reason, prior char death, retirement, 2nd char, etc.), this new character can select 4 RP Feats from the list below that it would qualify for (it would qualify for all RP Feats of Roleplay Level 20 or less). Note that, this new character will not be able to take advantage of the RP Feats you select until they reach the noted requisite PC Level.
